Walk cycle

Eadweard Muybridge inspired me to create how man walks. This animation shows how a strong man walks normally. The man's head moves but it looks down at the same direction every time .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F02hbpOCXZQ-Muybridge Plate 006-1 (Walking)

Muybridge shows how man takes long steps. When the man takes long steps the head goes back. This man looks more comedian.

Muybridge Plate 007 (Walking)

Rainbow Dance (1936) by Len Lye.This animator uses different kinds of colour for the movements of the character. This animation inspired me to do my own walk cycle. When the character moves it pauses and the movements of the character looks very realistic.

When the character steps forward his hand moves and pauses.

I have looked at Animating Horse Walk Cycle by animan1999. By watching this video i have learnt that an ostrich and a man walk like horse. The animator shows how horse walks this will help me to animate four legs characters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INQx-Lzs8mU

I have looked at "The Autumnal Walk" by Anik Rosenblum. By watching this animation it helped me to understand how the background and and character is different. The background is faded and the character is very dark this will make it stand out.The outline of the characters are even more darker this helps the audiences to follow the movements. When the character walks it's not normal but it really suits the character. The way the animator has portrayed the character is to look like he has been blown by wind.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR85cqg8Yxk

I have looked at another animation Walking by Ryan Larkin in 1968.The animator shows a walk cycle from a different perspective. When the character walks it changes the colour this makes it hard to focus.

Here the female turns into male. The animator has just drawn the outline of the character. When the characters hand and leg goes up it gets bigger and it gets small when the hand and leg goes down.
This will help me to come up with ideas how to do walk cycle.

Drawn Animation Tutorial - How to do a Run Cycle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPVmeY37a4c

I have watched a walk cycle. By watching the walk cycle this helped to come up with ideas and learnt how the body movements works. Before I didn't know when to move the body when the person is walking now i learnt how the body works.

Then i have made my own walk cycle after seeing angry animators. I made this walk cycle to understand and learn how to make a character walk. This will help me to make my own animation. After I have done 8 keyframes i clicked on 'loop' this will make the character walk and won't stop.

This is the animation that i made. This animation is kind of good because it's my first time making a character walk in flash. I have learnt how to make a character walk. Next time i can add more details and make a animation.

Frame by Frame

Gertie the Dinosaur the first film to combine live action footage with hand drawn animation. McCay used 10,000 hand drawings to make his Animation.

Rainbow Dance (1936) by Len Lye

This was my first idea which was hard and it would take too long to make it.I have screen shot this imagine from an animation. This imagine inspired me to understand the movements of the character.

Here I have made a straight line where my object or character will stand.
Then I have made two circles by using circle tool. One is big another one is small this will give me enough space to put a little circle in between .

Inside the two circle I putted another small circle and coloured in red so it will be easy to see the movements.

Then I started to animate the little red circle. I have used the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the circle.

I have named every layers. Naming the layers helps me to understand which layer I am working on.

This is my first Animation that I have made in 'flash'. I can improve this animation and make it more interesting by adding another ball. This animation is too simple. Next time I can make it loop.

squash and stretch

Bouncing ball

This is an simple Animation bouncing ball, next time i can make this Animation much better by adding more frames and make the ball stop slowly.

Squash and stretch

Here i have made a circle and painted in pink so it stands out.
I clicked on circle tool and made the circle.
I have named each layer so i don't get confused. I have moved the circle and pressed 'F6' to key frame.
I have used rotation tool to rotate the circle.

Some squash and stretch in a run cycle

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kdjHwyliE6k/URkTHvKmy_I/AAAAAAAAADM/DOrmkffzkC8/s1600/WalkCycle_Side.jpg

Here I have traced I man walking (squash and stretch). I have used 'pencil' tool to trace him.

When I tried to colour the characters hands it didn't work so I clicked on 'paint' then clicked 'close large gaps'
The Animation was too fast then I made the frames longer. This will make the animation slow and it will look realistic. The reason the animation is too quick because i don't have enough frames. If i had more frames this animation would be much better.

I could make this animation way better if I spend more time on it.Next time to make this better i can add In-between and it will look more realistic. Maybe the man jumping up and down then starts to walk fast and slow.

12 Principles of animation

1. SQUASH AND STRETCH
This action gives the illusion of weight and volume to a character as it moves.
2. ANTICIPATION
This movement prepares the audience for a major action the character is about to perform, such as, starting to run, jump or change expression
3. STAGING
A pose or action should clearly communicate to the audience the attitude, mood, reaction or idea of the character as it relates to the story and continuity of the story line.
4. STRAIGHT AHEAD AND POSE TO POSE ANIMATION
Straight ahead animation starts at the first drawing and works drawing to drawing to the end of a scene.
5. FOLLOW THROUGH AND OVERLAPPING ACTION
When the main body of the character stops all other parts continue to catch up to the main mass of the character, such as arms, long hair, clothing, coat tails or a dress, floppy ears or a long tail (these follow the path of action)
6. SLOW-OUT AND SLOW-IN
As action starts, we have more drawings near the starting pose, one or two in the middle, and more drawings near the next pose.
7. ARCS
Arcs give animation a more natural action and better flow.
8. SECONDARY ACTION
Example: A character is angrily walking toward another character.
9. TIMING
Expertise in timing comes best with experience and personal experimentation, using the trial and error method in refining technique.
10. EXAGGERATION
Exaggeration is not extreme distortion of a drawing or extremely broad, violent action all the time. Its like a caricature of facial features, expressions, poses, attitudes and actions
11. SOLID DRAWING
Appeal, as you will use it, includes an easy to read design, clear drawing, and personality development that will capture and involve the audience's interest
12. APPEAL
Appeal, as you will use it, includes an easy to read design, clear drawing, and personality development that will capture and involve the audience's interest.

Face emotions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7JKpUJv1xo
I have looked at tutorials of misterh3d.This tutorial is very helpful because it shows animating a head turning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_NKlR2R5aM

I have looked at Animation Drawing Tutorial - How to Draw Happy Faces from AMB Animation Academy. In this Tutorial i have learnt how to draw different kinds of happy faces. The faces have too much details.

I have looked at jazza tutorials on youtube. I have learnt how to make different kinds of faces then i started to make an animation (Normal to Angry).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVrw24fYOIs
I have used pencil tool to just start with. I have drawn the outline of the face.

Here I have created a normal face by adding eyes, eyebrows and mouth.

Then I made the angry face by doing frame by frame. I also used 'Onion skin' this helped me to place the eyes, eyebrows and mouth in different position.

This animation is too simple and it's only going normal to angry maybe next time i can make it better by adding more details and add more movements. This is my first face emotions that i made in flash.

production

Pre-production

Story development-writing down something is great way the start then start developing it into details. Set a target audience before starting Story development. The first thing when you start any projects its better to do mind-mapping it helps you and gives the idea to develop and come up with excellent stories. Mind mapping is a group or individual creativity technique by which efforts are made to find a conclusion problem by gathering a list of ideas contributed by its members.

script-before any script can be formed you must have an idea of a story.if you don't have an idea its best to look at

  • Comic books
  • Novels
  • Your favorite cartoon shows
  • Fairy tales
  • Movies
  • Animation
  • Newspapers

After that you will have some kind of story then start storyboarding

Start the script

  • Title
  • Scene-character location
  • Character in the scene
  • Dialogue -whoever is talking
  • Sfx-Sound
Style

Mood boards

A mood board is simply a collection of colours,images,fabrics-anything,that helps give a feeling what the project is about.Mood board It is a tool for creatives and clients to come to an agreement about style. They come in many forms and they might even be called something different depending on the industry that you’re in.

Character development -Characters are the most important component of any narrative.Without a characters there would be no story.Without characters any movies or animations won't be successful as much. Character development is an important skill to anyone because characters are important parts of any creatives writing from books and short stories.

details about characters
  • He/She
  • Tall
  • Short
  • Thin
  • Fat
  • Old
Character (Eg. People,physical characteristics,animals,creatures)
For all the drawings the face is coloured in dark to show the anger of the characters also they are just experimenting different kids of colours.Water colour and pencil have been used.

This image shows the step of making the character. This drawing is very tight and details have been done.

Storyboard
A storyboard is a series of drawing for pre-visualizing the shots of a animation. There are different type of storyboard. You can use colours or only draw the outline. A starboard is biggest role is to convey the story effectively.

Things to help the convey the story

  • Write captions under the drawing
  • Use arrows to show camera movements
  • Colour the object different from the background.

Productions schedule

schedule is very important in animation and if you don't keep up with the schedule there is a big risk that you can put your team behind this will affect the company your working for. There are lot of ways to schedule a animated film production. The steps included in your overall digital pipeline, the size of your team and how many hours and assets. Before you start, some answers a couple of important questions about your overall production plan.

Animatic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiZRuOxiCGw#t=122
Animatic is an animated storyboard. Boards are brought together in an editing program and are cut together with the correct timing and pace of the animation. It has basic sound effects and dialogue. Sound effects changes animation or films by making dramatic atmosphere. It helps the audience to understand what is going on and it also makes it more interesting and realistic.
